ASIAN FOCUS

I couldn’t understand the title of the poster when I read it the first time – what is “parents with an Asian focus”? It sounds really weird. I thought it was just me being pedantic so I sought a second opinion from my friend and he couldn’t understand it either.

Initially I thought that the pairing “Asian focus” was what made the sentence really weird but later on I realized that this is not true because “X-focus” sounds equally weird too so I concluded that it must be the context since saying “News with an Asian focus” sounds perfectly fine. Perhaps the poster should be rewritten as “finally, survival kits for parents with an Asian perspective”? It sounds better to me. What do you think? However, one cannot say “News with an Asian perspective” because it lends a totally different meaning from “News with an Asian focus”. Amazing how much of a difference context plays.

Another question that came to mind was what “Asian focus” referred to – the parents? Or the survival kits? The picture is too blur and small here, but lower down it says, “a fantastic resource…especially useful to our Asian parents because it is written especially with our local settings in mind…” So I guess “Asian focus” refers to both the parents and the survival kits. It seems that they think Asian parents automatically have an Asian perspective – so prejudiced!
